Chapter 4 - Fire in the Valley

The fire flared rapidly, ignited by military-grade thermite charges that consumed the dry timber of the old eastern barn within minutes. Plumes of thick, dark smoke drifted into the night sky, illuminated by brilliant orange and crimson flames that threatened to spread to the nearby rows of apple trees.
Inside the estate house, the internal fire-suppression alarms sounded a low, pulsing tone.
Sarah stood at the central security console, her hands working the touchscreen controls to activate the orchard's automated irrigation cannons—giant water turrets designed to protect the crop from frost and summer droughts.
"Irrigation Sector East activated," Sarah announced, her voice calm and steady despite the emergency. "Water pressure is holding at maximum."
Across the estate lawn, giant steel nozzles rose from the ground, spraying thousands of gallons of water per minute across the boundary trees, creating a dense wall of mist that halted the fire’s advance toward the house.
Marco walked into the command center, wearing a tactical vest over his dark shirt, holding a satellite tracking unit. "The fire was a distraction, Sarah. Julianna used the smoke cover to drive a heavy transport vehicle through the eastern service gate."
"Where is she heading?" Sarah asked, stepping up to the map.
"Directly toward the central conservatory," Marco said, pointing to a red tracking icon moving rapidly across the eastern driveway. "She thinks we've evacuated the ground floor."
"Where is Luca?" Sarah asked, her voice tight with concern.
"He's cutting off her rear escape route near the lake," Marco said, looking into Sarah's eyes with reassuring strength. "Sarah, you need to step down into the safe room with the children."
"No," Sarah said firmly, taking a deep breath and standing her ground. "The safe room is fully secured with independent life-support systems—the children are safer down there alone than if we open the hatch now. I'm staying here with you."
Marco looked at her for a moment, seeing the same unyielding courage that had made her step between a bullet and his family years ago. He pulled a compact 9mm sidearm from his holster, checking the safety before handing it to her grip.
"Keep your thumb on the safety until you see a target," Marco instructed softly.
"I know how to shoot, Marco," Sarah replied, holding the weapon with practiced, steady hands. "I learned from the best."
Outside the glass-walled conservatory, the heavy tires of an armored SUV screeched to a halt on the wet stone terrace. The vehicle’s doors slammed open, and four mercenaries stepped onto the marble patio, followed by Julianna Moretti.
Julianna was dressed in an expensive black leather coat, her dark hair pulled back into a tight braid. Her face was beautiful, but her sharp, dark eyes were consumed by a manic, obsessive rage. Behind her stepped an frail, elderly man supported by a cane—Viktor Moretti.
Viktor looked broken, his former authority reduced to a trembling shadow of the man who had once ruled Chicago's underground.
"Is this the place, Viktor?" Julianna demanded, looking at the sprawling, modern mansion surrounded by blooming gardens. "Is this where Luca built his little paradise?"
"Julianna... we should take the accounts and leave," Viktor rasped, his voice weak and raspy. "Marco and Luca... they aren't the boys we used to beat in the cellars. They built something real here. They have federal backing—"
"Shut up, old man!" Julianna snapped, slapping her father’s shoulder in disgust. "You built an empire of stone and let a waitress and two traitors steal it from you! I'm taking it back tonight!"
Julianna raised a nickel-plated handgun, aiming it directly at the reinforced glass doors of the conservatory.
"Luca!" Julianna screamed into the smoky night air. "Come out and face your family, or I burn this house with your children inside!"
The reinforced glass doors did not shatter. Instead, they swung open smoothly from the inside.

Marco stepped out onto the marble terrace, framed by the warm interior lights of the mansion, his hands held casually at his sides, completely unfazed by the four mercenaries pointing weapons at his chest.
"You're making a mess of my lawn, Julianna," Marco said smoothly.
