Chapter 1 - The Silver Band on the Table

The wedding ring sat exactly in the center of the dark mahogany table, catching the midday sun. Right next to it, the porcelain mug still bore the dried, dark brown stain of the coffee that had scaldingly remade Claire’s life just hours before.
When Daniel walked through the front door at 4:00 PM, his mind was occupied with the $40,000 beauty studio deposit. Vanessa was humming behind him, already picking out color palettes on her phone.
"I'm telling you, Danny, once Claire signs over the card, we can franchise by next year," Vanessa said, kicking off her heels.
Daniel didn't answer. He stopped in his tracks, staring at the kitchen table. The house was deathly quiet. There was no smell of dinner, no sound of Claire’s design software humming from the home office. Only the ring.
He walked over, his brow furrowing. He picked up the silver band. Inside, the inscription read Daniel & Claire, Forever. Beneath it lay a single piece of paper. It wasn't a tearful goodbye note. It was a formal, cold, legal notice: Trespass Warning and Notice of Temporary Restraining Order.
"What is that?" Vanessa asked, leaning over his shoulder.
Daniel’s face went pale. "She went to the police."
"Oh, please. She’s bluffing," Vanessa scoffed, though her voice trembled slightly. "She’s a freelance designer, Daniel. She doesn't have the guts to survive on her own, let alone sue you."
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone buzzed. It was an automated alert from his personal bank account. Transaction Denied: Insufficient Funds.
Panic flared in his chest. He quickly logged into his online banking. His jaw dropped. The joint account, which held $85,000 of what he considered "their" shared money, was sitting at exactly $0.00.
A second later, his phone rang. It was an unknown number. He answered it, his voice laced with venom. "Claire, if this is a joke—"

"This is not Claire," a sharp, professional voice interrupted. "This is Miriam Cole, Senior Partner at Cole & Associates, representing Claire Vance. Mr. Vance, you have been served. Do not attempt to contact my client. Any further communication must go through me. And by the way... I suggest you find a place to stay tonight. The police are already on their way to enforce the eviction from her property."
The line went dead. Daniel looked up at the ceiling of the beautiful brownstone. For eight years, he believed he owned this kingdom. Now, the walls felt like they were closing in.
