Chapter 21 - The Ripples of Expansion

The sweet autumn breeze of the bay was a momentary grace. Within the sleek glass-and-steel offices of The Vance Haven headquarters, the atmosphere was charged with the electric energy of progress—and the quiet tension that always accompanied it. Claire stood before a massive interactive map of the United States. Five golden pins marked their active centers. A sixth pin, silver and unlit, hovered over Chicago.

"The Midwest expansion is our biggest undertaking yet, Claire," David said, stepping into the room and setting down a stack of legal briefs. He looked tired but held that familiar, grounding warmth in his eyes. "But Chicago is... different. The old political machines there run deep. And our presence is already ruffled some very expensive feathers."

Claire turned, smoothing the lapels of her cream blazer. Her fingers brushed her jawline, finding the faint silver scar. "We expected resistance, David. Whenever you give victims a voice and a legal shield, the people who rely on their silence get angry. Who is leading the charge against us?"

"Alderman Thomas Hayes," David replied, pulling up a file on the tablet. "He’s a close associate of the late Councilman Croft’s old network. He’s publicly claiming that The Vance Haven is an 'unregulated entity' that meddles in private family court disputes. Privately, we know his sister-in-law is currently using our legal aid to escape his brother, a highly abusive tech developer."

"So it's personal for them," Claire said, her voice steady. "They want to keep their secrets behind closed doors. But we've spent three years tearing those doors down."

"Hayes is smart," David warned, stepping closer and taking her hands in his. "He’s not going to attack us with crude threats. He's going to use the law, the media, and whatever dirt he can manufacture. We need to tread carefully."

Claire looked into David’s eyes, finding the same unwavering support that had saved her once before. "We don't hide anymore, David. We build."
