Chapter 4 - Caught in the Web

"We have a hit," the IT director at Vance Financial announced, pointing at the flashing red monitor.
Claire and Miriam were standing behind him. On the screen, Daniel’s digital footprint was glowing brightly. He was currently transferring a quarter of a million dollars out of the company's reserve funds.
"Should we block it?" the director asked.
"No," Claire said calmly. "Let it go through."
Miriam smiled, writing a note on her legal pad. "Grand larceny. Wire fraud. Inter-state theft. He just turned a messy divorce into a mandatory minimum fifteen-year prison sentence. He walked right into the trap."
"What about Vanessa?" Claire asked.
"The moment that money hits her account, she becomes an active co-conspirator in a felony," Miriam explained. "I’ll notify the DA’s office immediately. They will issue arrest warrants by tomorrow morning."

Claire walked out of the server room, feeling a strange sense of detachment. She remembered the way Vanessa had smiled as the scalding coffee burned her flesh. She remembered how Daniel told her to 'think carefully before coming back.'
She had thought carefully. And now, she was going to destroy them both.
