Chapter 14 - The Poisoned Press
The next morning, the headlines were brutal.
“Philanthropist or Fraud? Claire Vance Accused of Multimillion-Dollar Asset Shielding in Bitter Divorce Aftermath.”
The articles were filled with fabricated leaks from Richard’s legal team, painting Claire as a calculating, greedy socialite who used charity as a tax haven and a weapon to spite her ex-husband. The board of directors at The Vance Haven was thrown into a panic. Major donors began calling, threatening to withdraw their support if the allegations weren't cleared immediately.
"This is bad, Claire," David said as they met in the foundation's war room. "The court has scheduled an emergency hearing for Friday to decide on the freezing of our operational accounts. If Sterling convinces the judge there's a plausible case of fraud, we are locked out of our own funds."
Claire stood in front of the whiteboard, looking at the network of Richard's associates. "Richard said he had 'friends in high places.' He’s not funding this lawsuit himself. Who is Victor Sterling's primary benefactor?"
David searched his database. "Sterling’s firm receives a massive, ongoing retainer from a holding company called Aegis Holdings. It’s a shell company registered in Panama."
"Can we trace it?" Claire asked.
"Not easily. It would take months of forensic accounting, and we only have three days before the hearing," David sighed.

Claire looked at the silver scar in the mirror. Think, Claire, think. Richard was arrogant, but he was also lazy. He always used the same financial advisors, the same old-money networks. Suddenly, a memory clicked. During their marriage, Richard had boasted about a "foolproof vault" his family used for dark money—a private wealth management firm called Lennox & Sons.
"David," Claire’s eyes lit up. "We don't need to trace Panama. We need to look at Lennox & Sons. Richard's father was a founding partner. If Richard is receiving offshore funds to pay Sterling, the transactions must clear through them."
