Chapter 25 - Cornered in the Wind

The next evening, Claire left the West Loop office late. David had stayed behind to coordinate with the local police, leaving Claire to walk the short distance to their hotel. The Chicago wind was fierce, whistling through the concrete canyons.

As she turned down a quieter side street, she noticed the heavy, rhythmic footsteps behind her. She quickened her pace, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Running won't save you this time, Claire," a smooth, mocking voice sounded from the shadows of an alleyway.

She stopped, turning slowly. Emerging from the darkness was Arthur Vance, looking every bit the wealthy aristocrat in a cashmere overcoat, though his eyes held the same vacant, predatory coldness she had spent her life escaping.

"Arthur," Claire said, keeping her voice steady. "You shouldn't have left your estate."

"You’ve become quite the thorn in our side, Claire," Arthur said, taking a slow step forward. "My family built this city’s legal framework. We own the judges, the aldermen, and the ground you walk on. You think your little crusade can survive here? Look around you. Your shelter is charred. Your reputation is one headline away from ruin."

"I’m not the girl you bought for your son, Arthur," Claire said, her posture rigid, her chin held high. "Your son is in a federal penitentiary. Your allies are falling. And you are standing in a public street, threatening a federal witness."

Arthur laughed, a low, chilling sound. "A witness to what? You have no proof of anything. Run back to your safe harbor in the bay, Claire. Because if you stay in my city, I will ensure your precious David never practices law again. I will break him, and then I will break you."

He turned and vanished into the fog, leaving Claire standing alone in the cold wind, her silver scar tingling with a fierce, burning defiance.

Chapter2 6: Deep Roots of Corruption

When Claire returned to the hotel, she told David everything. The threat to his career was what pushed her over the edge. She could tolerate attacks on herself, but she would not let David be destroyed for her battles.

"He’s trying to isolate us," David said, his arms wrapped tightly around her as they stood by the window. "But he’s made a critical mistake. By confronting you personally, he’s shown his hand. He’s terrified of what we’ll find."

"Then let's find it," Claire said. "Maya and I have been digging into the family dockets. Judge Harrison Vance has signed off on dozens of highly irregular 'private settlements' involving major real estate developers in the city."

"Developers linked to Arthur Vance’s shell companies," David realized, his eyes shining with sudden clarity. "They aren't just protecting their family name, Claire. They are using the family court system to force vulnerable women into signing away their properties and assets during divorces, then selling those assets to Arthur’s companies at a fraction of the value."

"It’s state-sanctioned theft," Claire said, horrified. "They are targeting wealthy but vulnerable women, isolating them, and using the court to strip them of everything."

"We need a whistleblower," David said. "Someone who was part of the system but got squeezed out."

Claire looked at the list of retired court clerks. "I know exactly who to call."
