Chapter 17 - The Courtroom Showdown

The courtroom was packed with journalists, photographers, and curious onlookers from the high-society circles Claire had abandoned. Richard sat at the plaintiff's table, looking smugly confident, whispering to Victor Sterling.

Claire sat next to David, her posture elegant, her expression unreadable.

Judge Margaret Cho, a formidable woman known for her no-nonsense attitude, banged her gavel. "We are here to address the plaintiff’s motion for an emergency injunction to freeze the assets of The Vance Haven foundation. Mr. Sterling, you may present your case."

Sterling stood up, painting a vivid, albeit entirely fabricated, picture of Claire as a thief who had defrauded her husband and her family to build a vanity project. "Your Honor, we have evidence of irregular transactions pointing to a systematic stripping of marital assets."

"Thank you, Mr. Sterling," Judge Cho said. "Mr. Vance, what is your response?"

David stood up, adjusting his glasses. "Your Honor, we agree that there has been a systematic stripping of assets and illegal financial transactions. However, they were not committed by my client. We present to the court the verified financial records of Lennox & Sons and Aegis Holdings."

David projected the documents onto the courtroom screens. The room fell dead silent as the flowcharts showed the direct path of money from Councilman Julian Croft’s illicit funds, through Panama, and directly into Richard’s defense fund to launch this very lawsuit.

"This is a fraudulent lawsuit, Your Honor," David declared, his voice echoing through the chamber. "It is an abuse of the judicial system designed to force a non-profit organization into bankruptcy so a corrupt politician can seize public land. We have already submitted these files to the Federal Prosecutor's Office."

Richard’s face turned from smug satisfaction to a sickly, pale white. He turned to Sterling, who was already packing his briefcase, realizing the career-ending disaster they had walked into.
