Chapter 28 - The Sting

The press conference sent shockwaves through the city. Under immense public pressure, the State Bar suspended the petition against David, and the Department of Justice opened an inquiry into Judge Harrison Vance’s courtroom activities.
But Arthur Vance was not a man to surrender quietly.
Claire received a call on her private line. "Claire. It's Arthur. You've played your hand well. Let's make a deal. I will retire, and Harrison will step down from the bench. In exchange, you drop the class-action suit and leave the Chicago market to our associates."
"I don't make deals with monsters, Arthur," Claire said.
"Then you should know that your star whistleblower—the retired clerk, Helen Vance—has decided to take a little trip," Arthur said, his voice dripping with malice. "She’s currently at our private estate in Lake Geneva. If you want her to testify, you’ll have to come get her yourself. Alone. If I see a single police officer, Helen will have a very unfortunate slip on the lake docks."
Claire looked at David, who was already shaking his head, realizing the danger. But Claire knew this was their only chance to secure the definitive proof they needed to lock Arthur away forever.
"I’ll be there in two hours," Claire said, hanging up.

"You aren't going alone, Claire," David said, his face pale.
"I have to appear to go alone," Claire corrected, her eyes burning with a brilliant, calculated light. "But I’ll be wearing the same tracking device we used to catch Richard's associates. You and the federal agents will be right behind me."
