Chapter 22 - The Whispering Ghost

The first sign that the battle had turned personal arrived not in a courtroom, but in a small, unmarked courier envelope delivered directly to Claire’s private penthouse.
Inside was a single vintage key, rusted at the teeth, and a handwritten note on expensive, heavy cardstock:
"A golden cage is still a cage, Claire. You changed the locks, but I still have the blueprints. See you in the Windy City."
Claire stared at the elegant, looping handwriting. It wasn't Richard's—his penmanship was always aggressive and erratic. This script was chillingly precise, belonging to someone who had spent decades crafting an image of absolute perfection. It was her former father-in-law, Arthur Vance, the patriarch of the family who had silently funded Richard's cruelty from behind the scenes before retreating to his estate in Chicago.
"Arthur," Claire whispered, the air suddenly freezing in her lungs.
David came into the living room, immediately sensing the change in her posture. He took the note from her trembling hand, his eyes scanning the elegant script. His jaw clenched, a muscle leaping in his cheek.
"He’s out of the shadows," David said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Arthur Vance has kept his hands clean for years, letting Richard take the fall. If he’s reaching out now, it means the Chicago expansion is threatening something he cannot afford to lose."

"He thinks I'm still the frightened girl who let them dictate her worth," Claire said, her voice rising with a cold, clear strength. "He thinks he can scare me away from his territory."
"We go to Chicago together," David said, his eyes burning with protective resolve. "We don't let him set the rules of this game."
