The syndicate struck back the next morning.
A massive smear campaign launched across major Chicago news outlets. Headlines accused David Vance of unethical legal practices, alleging he had bribed local officials to secure the permits for The Vance Haven’s shelters.
"They are trying to revoke my pro-bono license in this state," David said, looking at the emergency petition filed with the state bar. "If they succeed, I can’t represent our clients or our foundation in court."
"We need to change the narrative," Claire said, her mind working furiously. "David, they want a quiet legal battle. They want to bury us in administrative hearings. We need to make this loud. We need to go public."
Claire called a press conference directly in front of the soot-stained south side shelter. Dozens of reporters gathered, drawn by the drama of the "Vance Family Feud."
Claire stepped up to the microphones, looking radiant, poised, and utterly fearless.
"Three years ago, I survived domestic terror," Claire began, her voice carrying over the crowd. "I built The Vance Haven to ensure no woman had to fight that battle alone. Today, we are facing a different kind of terror—a systemic, corporate corruption that uses the very courts meant to protect us as weapons of extortion. The Vance family thinks they own this city. But they do not own the truth."

"We are filing a class-action lawsuit on behalf of thirty-two women who were stripped of their homes by this court," Claire declared. "We will not be silenced. We will not be moved."
